Roel's Reflections: Q1 2022

Hiber's CEO Roel Jansen tells us what's been going on in Q1.

If you come to Amsterdam this time of year, you’ll see tulips all around the city.

As a celebration of Spring, the government plants one flower for every resident. Over the last few weeks I’ve watched them push their way out of the soil and unfurl their petals on my way to our office. The city is in full bloom right now. And it’s certainly stunning.

With the start of Spring comes the end of Q1, 2022. Q1 was a remarkable quarter for us, here at Hiber. Busy. At times, even hectic. But over the last few months we’ve accomplished quite a bit and I have to say, I’m proud of what we’ve done.

One big win from Q1 is actually halfway across the planet from our Amsterdam HQ. We officially incorporated our Brazilian entity, Hiber LATAM, LTDA. We also hired our first Brazilian colleague, Victor, who is based out of Rio de Janeiro. In all, it’s a big deal because now we have boots on the ground in Latin America. We can visit customers (and prospects!) in person. Have easier access to trade shows. And, in general, be more present in the region.

Moving away from Brazil and over to Malaysia, I also want to highlight a special experience organised by our customer training team.

Moving away from Brazil and over to Malaysia, I also want to highlight a special experience organised by our customer training team. One of the benefits of HiberHilo is that engineering teams can install it themselves. As part of the pilot test that one of the world’s largest oil companies is doing for the HiberHilo solution, our team prepared a virtual training for their engineers on how to install the sensors and gateway in the field.

Before the training, the engineers had expected the installation to be a long and complex process. After all, that’s what they were used to when it comes to tech in oil and gas. They’d planned to go out to the field two weeks after the training and take on the complex installation process.

But after seeing how easy it was to install HiberHilo, the team realised they didn’t have to wait. Instead, they went out later that week and got the entire field online in just a few hours, to their surprise. It was cool to see that HiberHilo changes the story around what’s possible out in the field.

So much more is on the way.

It’s all exciting. It’s all part of our acceleration. And I’m thrilled to say that so much more is on the way. Q2 is already looking pretty amazing. And I’m excited to see what comes out of it.

There are plenty of other wins. But the thing I'm actually most proud of is the team.

We signed our first customer in Latin America, Vista Mexico. We have our third contract with a Shell operation. We’re now working with ENI, one of the supermajor oil companies. We sent out gateways and sensors to customers around the planet. We shipped our first wired-to-wireless sensor out, a big achievement for the next phase of HiberHilo. We hired 9 people.

But the thing I’m most proud of has nothing to do with the business at all, actually. It has to do with our people. After the war in Ukraine broke out, we knew we wanted to do something to support the people affected by the violence. As a team, we donated €6,500 for ground assistance and transportation solutions to help bring Ukranian refugees to Western European countries.
